Mayors across the Iron Range announced their endorsement of DFL candidate Dave Lislegard for the Minnesota House of Representatives 6B seat.
Lislegard announced his candidacy in April and early support is mounting for the current mayor of Aurora and president of the Range Association of Municipalities and Schools.
He was also recently endorsed by the Iron Range Building and Construction Trades.
“There is no one better to represent this region’s voice down in St. Paul than Dave Lislegard,” said Mountain Iron Mayor Gary Skalko. “His passion, courage and unwavering support to move our region forward is why I proudly stand and endorse Dave Lislegard as our next 6B State Representative.”
Among the mayors backing Lislegard are Gary Skalko of Mountain Iron, Larry Cuffe Jr. of Virginia, Mark Skelton of Hoyt Lakes, Jim Weikum of Biwabik, Rick Cannata of Hibbing, Chuck Novak of Ely and Andrea Zupancich of Babbitt.
In statements they said Lislegard was a constant supporter of the region with first-hand knowledge of the issues, who has gone to St. Paul and Washington D.C. on behalf of the Iron Range. His support, they said, has extended to broadband, local government aid, the wild rice sulfate rule and the PolyMet land exchange bill that was authored by Congressman Rick Nolan and passed in the U.S. House.
“Dave Lislegard is a candidate for the state Legislature representing District 6B. Dave is an unrelenting champion for the Iron Range. He possesses strong family values, support for labor and is an advocate for our economic future by supporting diversity in the workplace. He has been a consistent voice and supporter of clean water and both ferrous and nonferrous mining,” said Cuffe.
“Dave is the candidate that will represent us. He loves this community and will put his heart and soul into all his works.”
Lislegard is heading for an August primary against Shaun Hainey, who won the party’s uncontested endorsement earlier this year. They are looking to replace current 6B Rep. Jason Metsa, DFL-Virginia, who is seeking the party nomination in the 8th Congressional District.
Republican Skeeter Tomczak is also running in House 6B.
“I have had the privilege of working with Dave for the past six years, and I can tell you that he works tirelessly on behalf of this region of the state of Minnesota,” Skelton said. “Regardless of a person’s political affiliation, I believe Dave will work on behalf of all of us in representing District 6B."
