United Steelworkers District 11 announced their support of Dave Lislegard by endorsing him Tuesday for the Minnesota House 6B seat.

A former Steelworker, Lislegard announced in April that he would run as a DFL candidate to replace Jason Metsa, who is running in the 8th Congressional District race.

“Actions speak louder than words, especially on the Iron Range,” said John Arbogast, president of USW Local 1938. “Dave Lislegard has been engaged on every issue critical to our members’ ability to earn a living and keep our region vital for the next generation. I stand in solidarity and endorse Dave Lislegard for State Representative 6B.”

Lislegard was a member of USW Local 4108 with LTV until he was laid off in 2001 when the plant was shut down. He and his family managed to stay in the area and Lislegard used the time to earn his degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

“As a third generation miner and former member of USW Local 4108 this endorsement is something that has deep personal meaning to me,” said Lislegard in a phone interview Tuesday. “We have a rich history here on the Iron Range and I will work hard and carry the voice of our region with great pride.”

Lislegard, who is currently the mayor of Aurora, recently received endorsements from several Iron Range mayors and the Iron Range Building and Construction Trades. Lislegard is the president of the Range Association of Municipalities and Schools and an active member of Jobs for Minnesotans.

“Dave Lislegard will be a strong voice for working families, communities and education,” said John Rebrovich, assistant director of District 11. “As a past member of USWA 4108, Dave understands the impact when LTV shut down to workers, their families, retirees and the schools. That impact is why Dave has fought hard for the Iron Range in the past, present and future.”

District 11 stretches across nine states in the Midwest and serves more than 32,000 members. It represents about 3,200 in House District 6B.

“In the two decades I’ve known Dave, he’s been a tireless advocate for the people of the Iron Range,” said Cliff Tobey, president United Steelworkers Local 2660, “and I’m confident that as our representative he’ll continue the great work.”

Lislegard is heading for an August primary against Shaun Hainey, who won the party’s uncontested endorsement earlier this year. Republican Skeeter Tomczak is also running in House 6B.

Filing for the House 6B race ends June 5. Lislegard and Hainey are set for the Aug. 14 primary for the DFL nomination.

The general election is Nov. 6.
